John 15:5-8 (Passion)
“I am the sprouting vine, and you’re my branches. As you live in union with me as your source, fruitfulness will stream from within you. But when you live separated from me, you are powerless. If you live separated from me, you will be discarded like shriveled-up branches that are gathered up and thrown into the fire to be burned. But if you step into my life in union with me, and if my words live powerfully within you, then you can ask whatever you desire, and it will be done. When your lives bear abundant fruit, you demonstrate that you are my mature disciples who glorify My Father!”
Prayer, fasting and reading the Word of God are means through which you approach and relate wonderfully with God. In these verses, Jesus invites you to “live in union” with Him as your source. Connecting with Christ through these spiritual disciplines brings about the special power of grace that produces abundant fruit within you. Simply put, you will be able to do in Christ what you could never do alone by direct effort! Welcome to the realm of faith in which your renewed desires and requests come to pass, just as He has promised.
The January Fast of 2019 provides a great opportunity for you to look within and strengthen your internal connection to Christ. Here is a great chance to establish these spiritual disciplines in your everyday life. As you do, the power and presence of God will increase more and more as everything is made new to the glory of God.
Question: What does the word “union” imply about your relationship with Christ?
Challenge: After each week of daily prayer and Bible reading, record in your journal the changes you can sense happening within you, such as an increase in awareness of His presence.
Prayer: Lord, keep me connected to you at any cost, for I never want to live separated from You, my Source of Life. Amen.
