DAY 19: Worship That Promotes Open Heavens

“At that time, Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, He saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” Mark 1:9-11

Worship often precedes open heavens. In this particular verse, Jesus had just been baptized in water - an act of worship and obedience. Jesus did not need to be baptized as an act of repenting of His sins - He was without sin; He was baptized as a sign of surrender to His Father’s will and plan for His life. Jesus knew that He couldn’t do anything without His Father and that His Father’s plans were better than His own. Because of His obedience, surrender, and worship, the heavens were “torn open,” and the Spirit of the Lord came upon Him. God opened the heavens over Jesus as a sign of His connection with His Son and to allow the Spirit to rest upon Him.

Application: For us, I believe we experience open heavens in the same way. First, it begins with a desire to be close to God. In the scripture above, God opened the heavens to give Jesus direct access to His Spirit. God does not want any separation between Himself and His children; He wants to be close. Secondly, we worship. Worship that truly promotes open heavens is worship that is completely selfless, sacrificial, and surrendered. When we worship selflessly, we disregard what we get out of it; we are simply there to worship our King and bring Him glory. When we worship sacrificially, we bring all that we are and all we have to God, totally abandoned, open and transparent. When we worship with a surrendered heart, we are saying “not my will, but Yours be done.” We leave our plans and expectations at the door and we allow God to do whatever He wants to do, in us and through us. These three aspects of worship begin with the heart; they are internal decisions that are then shown outwardly. The next time you enter into worship, challenge yourself to assess these areas of your heart. Come to Him completely open, and watch how He meets you there with open heavens.

Prayer: God, I am completely in awe of who You are. Thank you for sending Jesus as the perfect example of how to worship You. I want to experience Your open heavens, not just in a worship experience, but in my everyday life. I want to be closer to You than I ever have been before. Help me to become more aware of Your Spirit and Your presence. Help me to be more like Jesus in my worship - selfless, sacrificial, and surrendered. I love you, Lord. Amen.
