“I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” - Psalm 34:4-8 (NIV)
Do you remember the slogan, “Good to the last drop”? As a little girl, I can remember seeing those Maxwell House Instant Coffee commercials wishing I was old enough to have some. Usually a famous actor or actress, posed in a perfectly clean kitchen with amazing lighting. Holding a pretty cup while steam gently evaporated, the star would make that “I’ve never tasted anything like it before” face. As I grew older, I, of course, realized that instant coffee wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. It can fill a void for a craving maybe, but it will never compare to the real thing. While meditating on these verses above, the Lord brought that slogan and memories swirling back to my mind. I wonder if I treat God like a cup of instant coffee. Do I sometimes want Him to fill that void, quickly and in my timing? Or maybe, do I put other things in His place by not wanting to press in and be patient? The truth is there is NO substitute for the real thing. Taste and see that the Lord is good!
Question: Are there any areas of your life that you are putting substitutes in His place?
Challenge: Through this time of fasting and journaling, spend a couple minutes calling out those areas in your life and ask God to show you how He is working on your behalf.
