“There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.” - Ezra 8:21 (NIV)
After being in Babylonian captivity for many years, the book of Ezra sheds a light of hope for the people of Israel. It eloquently responds to the question on every Israelite’s mind, “Is there hope for the future?” the response, in sum, is a response to the people of God for many years to come: the God of Heaven, who exercises sovereign control over history to fulfill His Word, blesses those who seek Him. Ever feel like you are walking the wilderness of life looking for answers or just simply a sign to guide your next step? Maybe your history doesn't reflect the desires of your future. Maybe your future seems dim like the Israelites’ in captivity. Be encouraged, because when you seek Him first, His overpowering strength is always sufficient.
Question: One thing is for sure, the proof of desire is in the pursuit. So what are you pursuing?
Challenge: Through this time of fasting and journaling, seek first God’s kingdom by pursuing His guidance and asking what His desires are for your life.
Father, I pray that your people might humble themselves before you, the Sovereign God of Heaven, to seek from you a good route this year. May you strengthen your people along the journey and may we never forget that it is your hand that gives and takes away, according to your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen
