“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
- Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)
This is a very familiar scripture and one that people have quoted many times. David, throughout this psalm, acknowledged the omniscience and omnipresence of God. Because God created him, He knew everything about David...his innermost thoughts, his struggles, and his attitudes. Therefore, David’s prayer was that God would reveal even the things he didn’t realize were hidden. I believe David was so pure in his desire to please God, that he wanted to eliminate all impurity from his heart, and that needs to be our desire as well. One of my hobbies is baking. In order to make one of my family’s favorites, I have to be prepared. I need to make sure I have all the ingredients on hand. Since baking is so exacting, I can’t afford to skip any steps, nor substitute any ingredients. Otherwise, the end product would be “defective.” I believe we need that same preparation when we approach God in prayer, especially during a season of fasting. I remember a time when I had set my heart to seek God during time of fasting. I found myself praying David’s prayer, and immediately God pointed out something I didn’t even realize I had hidden. It was an offense I had toward someone, and I had to acknowledge it, and when I repented and released it, I felt a shift. It was like the airwaves opened, and there was nothing “blocking” my communication with God. As a result, that time of fasting and prayer was very powerful and strong in my life.
Question: What am I missing? What needs to be removed or adjusted to have a pure and clear relationship with You?
Challenge: Through this time of fasting and journaling, write out what Holy Spirit reveals to you - things that need to change, areas you need to forgive and forget, maybe even something you must give up that you’ve held onto for too long.
God, I want to please you in everything I do. You know even the secret things I’ve stored in my heart that are not beneficial to my spiritual health. Reveal them to me, Lord, and point out those areas that need cleansing in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
